THURSDAY Nov 29, 2007, (News Locale) - In a startling revelation, a report published by the Office of National Statistics in Britain states that British children born today can expect to live for longer than at any time in history.
In fact the report says that life expectancy in the United Kingdom has reached the highest level so far for both men and women. While boys born today can expect to live up to 76.9 years, girls will have a life span of 81.3 years.
The report says that while death rates in Britain fell between 1991-93 and 2001-03 among all socio-economic groups, the viewpoint for underprivileged men appears to have stayed the same. However, there is some good news for the aged British men and women too. Men and women who would be 65 years old between 2004 and 2006 cab also expect to live 16.9 years and 19.7 years respectively.
In another context, the report states that men engaged in routine and lowly placed jobs like bus drivers, car park attendants and laborers are almost three times more likely to die prematurely compared chief executives of big enterprises. According to the report, people aged between 25 and 64 in “habitual occupations" have a far worse destiny than men in more specialized jobs. At the same time, it points to the fact that the disparity between the rich and the poor has persisted and even widened over time.
Substantiating the view-point, the report states that the death rate among unskilled male workers in 1991 was 1.2 times higher than that for professionals and that has increased to 2.9 times in 1991-93 and stood at 2.8 in 2001-03. Again, men working in routine jobs are 40 percent more likely to die prematurely than men in England and Wales as a whole.
