Stating that it will continue its agitation against the low wage packet, the Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) the meager rise in the allowance is nothing short of an insult to the doctors.
The KGMOA has also threatened the state government that the doctors are willing to drop out of the medical services if there is no substantial increase in the allowance package for the government health officials. A spokesperson for KGMOA said the current hikes of Rs 130 for PG allowances and Rs 20 for in charge allowances are an insult to doctors, many of whom have completed DM or MCh courses before joining the Health Services.
The association went on to add that the number of vacancies in the Health Services has risen from 300 to 700 posts solely due to the reluctance of the government to provide a decent pay package to the doctors, warning that the number of vacancies will rise further if the government does not act fast.
However the Kerala government has come down heavily on the 15 day strike, terming it as dereliction of duty with the sole purpose of drawing more money from the government even though they are being paid well.
In a joint press conference, the Health Minister P K Sreemathy and Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac criticized the strike, terming it as a gross misconduct on part of the doctors and questioned the agenda behind the strike. Both the ministers said that the health officials were paid well and the government will not be reviewing the entry cadre scale of the doctors.
