In a significant development, homeopathy – a favorite form of medical treatment among Indians that has been popular for nearly 250 years now, has now come under attack from the British doctors.
While the esteemed medical journal 'Lancet' has blasted the popular medical practice, widespread protests sparked off in Britain following the announcement of a seminar to be organized by the European Society of Homeopaths to discuss the role of homeopathy in treating HIV/AIDS on December 1.
In fact, professor emeritus of surgery at the University College London (UCL), Michael Baum, has come down heavily on the homeopath medicos’ claim that the medicine form can treat HIV/AIDS. According to Baum, although the common concept is that homeopathy doesn’t do any harm to patients, but there seems to be something serious and wrong when it is being used to treat something HIV.
In May this year, Baum and his friends sent a letter to all primary care trusts in Britain expressing concern over homeopathy treatment through the National Health Service and succeeded in stopping the practice in some of the NHS center using homeopathy. On the other hand, he has written in ‘Lancet’ that homeopathy is in no way a probable treatment for curing diseases like HIV/AIDS. At the same time, Baum has cited several cases where homeopathy treatment has led to adverse side effects among many patients.
In spite of this, Baum’s article says that homoeopathy still continues to be popular among the people as an estimated $78 million are being spent by people on this form of medical treatment. According to Baum, misconception that among the people that homeopathy is a herbal medicine made more and more of them adopt this form of treatment.
Meanwhile, homeopath doctors who have been using this form of medicine to cure as well as enhance the quality of life of HIV/AIDS victims in India are gearing up to strike back at Baum’s report. They say that studies conducted in Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai have found that homeopathy greatly helps HIV patients by improving their nutrition, lowering their anxiety and improving their health. On the contrary, these medicos alleged that homeopathy is cheaper and easier to practice compared to other procedures and surgeries, many doctors in the West are becoming apprehensive about the future of their own income.
