SUNDAY, April 20, (News Locale) - Older individuals usually lose their dexterity and mental function with age. A new study finds that regular aerobic exercises can in fact help senior citizens improve manual dexterity as well as their mental power.
Researchers at University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands reviewed 11 studies that involved 670 otherwise healthy people aged 55 and older. These randomized controlled trials judged the link between aerobics and cognitive processing speed and memory.
Reporting in 'The Cochrane Library' journal, the researchers said that all individuals practiced aerobics two to seven times per week for at least three months. The researchers assessed the participants' fitness and also conducted cognitive function tests.
The results were compared to a control group where adults did not exercise or practiced yoga. The studies found improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness as well as in motor function, cognitive speed and auditory and visual attention in the aerobics group as compared to the control group.
Lead researcher Maaike Angevaren of University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands said that the results were promising, but added larger studies were needed to confirm these benefits.
Aerobics is a form of exercise that comprises rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching and strength training routines with the goal of improving fitness. the main aim is to strengthen the endurance of the heart and the lungs.
While there is no doubt that benefits of aerobics are many, older individuals must consult their doctor before starting on any routine, especially if they have heart disease or diabetes.
