New Delhi, June 4 (ANI/Business Wire India): The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indus Towers Ltd. for cooperation in development of renewable energy technologies and energy-efficient solutions for Telecom services in India.

Indus Towers Ltd., a joint venture of Vodafone, Bharti, and Idea, has been incorporated with an objective to provide shared telecom infrastructure to telecom operators across the world on a nondiscriminatory basis.

Indus Towers will significantly contribute in propelling wireless communication sector towards achievement of Government's tele-density goals and broader rural coverage.

The MoU also envisages collaboration for wind farm development, renewable energy supply options for telecom shelters, and mobile power plant prototype development.

While signing the MoU, MM Joshi, Director, Enterprise and Technology Development, TERI said, "This is a pioneering thought on behalf of TERI and Indus Towers to use environmental strategy to innovate, create value and build competitive advantage. The MoU is an example of far-sightedness and will benefit the end-users and the society in the long-run. It is a matter of time before all other sectors catch up with this trend of energy shift."

The German CEO of Indus Towers Ltd., Stefan Langkamp, said, "Indus Towers has plans to deploy Green Energy initiatives on its sites."

Complimenting Indus Towers Ltd. for this important initiative, Amit Kumar, Director, Energy Environment Technology Division, TERI said, "TERI would analyze Indus's telecom shelter design critically in order to explore the possibilities of demand -side management as well as renewable energy resources based supply side options. It is hoped that these practical solutions would enable mobile service providers in meeting their universal service obligations even in those areas where there is either no grid electricity or it is very erratic."

The Indus Towers sites are spread across the nation and it has a big challenge to manage many sites with no Grid Backup (EB) availability. Hence, it needs a customized solution aligned to local environment.

To look into this problem, both TERI and Indus Towers have developed a TERI-INDUS Lab, where Indus Towers will set up a standard shelter along with the passive infrastructure in the TERI Gual Pahari campus along with stimulated BTS loads.

TERI will study the existing load requirement of the shelter and assess the energy efficiency measures, along with trying out with different renewable energy options.

In addition to the above, TERI will develop a euro container based mobile power plant prototype based on renewable energy system suited for Indian conditions.

Moreover, TERI will provide consultancy for Indus's wind farm development activities, which includes detailed energy estimation and a techno-commercial feasibility analysis. (ANI)
