The much-publicized and long-awaited ‘people’s car’ from Tata Motors, the largest automobile manufacturer in India, will be unveiled at the New Delhi Auto Expo on January 10 next.
Although the ‘small car’ priced at an amazing Rs one lakh ($2500) will be released commercially at a much later date next year, it is being unveiled at the New Delhi Auto Expo keeping in view the Tata’s tradition to launch their vehicles at this prestigious biennial event.
A company spokesman further said that the commercial production of the indigenously designed four-door, five-seater and rear-engine car is scheduled for the middle of 2008-09. Sources revealed that the company plans to display 6-8 models of the ‘people’s car’ that has been code named X3.
In addition to the ‘small car’, Tata Motors will also display an array of vehicles, both new and old, at the New Delhi Auto Expo. The company has booked a 5,200 sq m pavilion at the Expo where it will organize a joint show with Fiat India.
While the models of Ratan Tata’s ‘people’s car’ has been kept under camouflage at Tata Motors’ Pune plant and has been undergoing several tests for the last few months, the hype around the vehicle has prompted the company to keep it under tight security.
Sources disclosed that a top logistics company has been hired to transport the vehicles from Pune to New Delhi under tight security so that no one even manages a peep view of the vehicle before its launch on January 10.
It may be mentioned here that there were speculations regarding the launch date of the new car following Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata’s allegations in last August that some vested interests were putting hurdles on the path of the project.
Defying all such apprehensions, the ‘small car’ is now ready for public view and the company spokesman said that they were now busy working overtime to make up for the delays owing to political problems as well as a heavy monsoon at the Tata Motors’ new plant at Singur in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, the former chief of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) R A Mashelkar has stated that the Tata’s new ‘people’s car’ will revolutionize the transport system in the country. According to Mashelkar, who is a Director at Tata Motors, the new small car will be an ideal example of low cost transport in India as well as abroad.
