Not long ago, many had prophesized that the division in Dhirubhai Ambani’s empire would leave both the siblings – Mukesh and Anil – weaker and poorer. Contrary to such speculations, elder brother Mukesh Ambani crossed another milestone in his wealth creation spree and on Sunday became the first ever Indian to head a group with a collective market value of Rs five trillion!
Thanks to the bullish market trends and the zooming Sensex, Mukesh’s flagship company Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) emerged as India’s first venture to have a capital base of over Rs four trillion. And if you talk about the combined market capital of his three listed firms – RIL, Reliance Petroleum and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure – his group’s value soared past the Rs 5, 00,000-crore mark for the first time.
The dramatic developments since Saturday last have made people speculate if Mukesh Ambani is now the richest man alive. While some say he is and substantiate his claim by pointing to his personal worth of $63.2 billion, there are many others who argue that his share in Reliance Petrochem should not be counted separately as it is already reflected in RIL’s investments.
Whatever may be the arguments and counter-arguments; Mukesh is now worth over $50 billion and is certainly closing ranks with steel baron L N Mittal and also all set to dethrone the NRI businessman whose worth stands at $52 billion, and emerge as the planet’s richest person. Let there be another two percent extra approval in Reliance Industries stock price and Mukesh is certain to become the Numero Uno.
Meanwhile, even as the market continued to speculate on Mukesh’s meteoric rise, RIL was quick enough to refute reports that the senior Ambani had become the richest man in the world. The company sources countered that Mukesh’s worth had risen to $63.2 billion and stated that it was just over $50 billion. It may be mentioned here that earlier this year, billing Mukesh at $20.1 billion, Forbes had listed the Indian business magnate as the 14th richest person in the world.
