Research In Motion's BlackBerry wireless e-mail service was hit by severe outage Tuesday evening leaving millions of addicted North American users clueless. The outage began at 5.15 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday.
The Waterloo, Ontario-based Research In Motion said the service was interrupted, but it was working to restore BlackBerry service as well as to find the cause of the outage. BlackBerry devices are hugely popular and are used by all sectors of the society including the corporate sector, which is very dependent on BlackBerrys to function normally.
Users calling the customer service centers received an automated message saying, "We are currently experiencing a service interruption that is causing delays in sending or receiving messages. We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide updates as soon as they become available."
RIM officials were quoted by New York’s WNBC NewsChannel4's website as asking users to make alternate plans. The damage at the moment appears limited to North America.
Other parts of the world had uninterrupted service. Blackberry users in Germany, Japan and France reported no problems. RIM said it had restored the service and was working to solve how it was affected.
