LONDON - Lloyd's of London insurer and reinsurer Amlin PLC has reported robust pre-tax profits of £342.7 million thanks to a reduced number of claims owing to a low level of natural disaster events.
The record profits beat projected ones of £290 million for the year ending December 31.Pre-tax profits were at least 84 percent more than the £186.7 million reported at the same time last year.
The third biggest insurer in the Lloyd's market said that gross written premium increased 12 percent to £1.1 billion. However the combined ratio, which is a vital indicator of profitability slipped to 72 percent from 82 percent.
"This result is influenced by the low level of natural catastrophes in 2006 which was in stark contrast to the previous two years," Amlin said in a released statement.
The company also announced a basic total dividend of 12 pence a share up from the 10.2 pence per share paid out in 2005.It also announced a special dividend of 8 pence and said that it would continue to chart a course favoring active capital management policy in the near future.
Amlin maintained a positive outlook for the upcoming year.
