After trading solidly for almost all the day, the Sensex came close to breaking the 18,000 mark, but steadied after hitting 17,953. The benchmark index, however, floated around 17,639 levels.

With the bulls proving to be persistent the Sensex crossed the 17,900 mark before the lunch break and returned stronger possibly to create another milestone. In fact, as blue chips, led by heavyweight stocks, continue their march, the Sensex remains firm.

In global markets, Wall Street ended mixed on Tuesday, selling off large companies' shares, but buying up stocks of the smaller companies. Back home, power major NTPC was leading the charge in the stock market as its stocks moved up six percent. On the other hand, Nifty broke the 5,200 levels for the first time on Wednesday, but dropped down slightly to 5,143 levels in noon deals.
.
Tata Power, however, happens to be the largest gainer in the index. With stocks at Rs 1069, the private power major is up by more than 17.5 percent over its earlier closing price. A number of other power company stocks, including NTPC (6.9%) and Reliance Energy (6.35%) have also profited significantly on Wednesday. On the other hand, Reliance Communications has gained a little over 6.5 percent at Rs 652.25, while IPCL, Reliance Industries, ONGC, Sterlite Industries, Suzlon Energy, VSNL, Siemens and Tata Motors are up by 4% - 6.5%.

HDFC, ABB, BHEL, Satyam Computer Services, Bharti Airtel, Tata Consultancy Services, ITC, ACC, HCL Technologies, State Bank of India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Petroleum, SAIL, ICICI Bank, Infosys Technologies, Larsen & Toubro, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Grasim Industries, Hindalco and MTNL have also gained in the region of 2% - 4%.

Other majors like Tata Steel, BPCL, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank and Punjab National Bank have also posted strong gains. Among the pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithkline Pharma, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Sun Pharmaceuticals traded slightly higher, while GAIL India, Maruti Udyog and Hero Honda have gained modest ground.

Of the 2,760 stocks traded so far, 1,656 have declined, 1,050 have advanced and 54 are unchanged.
