Talks between British Airways and the Transport & General Workers Union are all set to resume as the airliner is trying hard to avert a strike by its workers for two days from January 30 in protest over sickness absence, pay and staffing. Even if both the parties reach an agreement, the threat of a strike has hit hard for BA as it has had to cancel over 1,300 flights to and from London airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick and has suggested its customers to make alternate arrangements. In an email to its customers, BA has written that though strikes were going ahead, it "was committed to finding a resolution" to the disagreement between the two parties. BA chief executive Willie Walsh will be personally present during the talks, which will be held just hours before the proposed strike goes ahead.
In a statement, the airline said, "We are working day and night to try to come to an agreement with the T&G that will stop any further planned strikes from taking place". BA is also thinking of offering "cash sweeteners" to its employees in order to dissuade them from taking part in the strike. However BA has termed the cash offering as just expenses for taxi journeys made by workers who will be continuing their job during the duration of the strike. According to analysts, the strike would mean a loss of 10-15 million pounds a day. If an agreement is not reached soon, then T&G workers are planning a second strike on February 5-7 and a third on February 12-14. Of the 14,000 crew of the airliner, around 11,000 workers are members of T&G.
