FRIDAY, September 5, (News Locale) - At first look, Tahaan is just like any other typical movie that features Kashmir. However director Santosh Sivan then proceeds to take us through stunning locales that reinforce the belief Kashmir is indeed the Land of Gods.
The movie tells the story of an eight-year-old boy Tahaan (Purav Bhandare) who lives in a meadow with his mother Haba (Sarika), grandfather (Victor Banerjee) and older sister Zoya (Sana Shaikh). Tahaan's father has been missing for the last three years ever since he went over across the mountains.
The boy's only friend is a donkey named Birbal. When Tahaan's grandfather dies, Birbal is traded off to a local moneylender who had loaned money to the family. Dejected and depressed, Tahaan tries to get Birbal back from Lalaji and his manger Kuka (Rahul Khanna) only to find that they have given away Birbal to Subhan Darr (Anupam Kher).
Tahaan learns that Subhan has taken the donkey across the mountains. He crosses the mountains and finds Subhan and strikes up a friendship with him. However Subhan gifts the donkey Birbal to his eight-year-old orphaned nephew much to Tahaan's dismay.
Determined to get his beloved Birbal back, Tahaan befriends a teenage boy Idrees who promises to get him Birbal if he carries a package across the mountains. The package is a grenade. Tahaan then starts off on a journey with Subhan and Zafar (Rahul Bose) on a journey that could very well be dangerous for him.
To find out if Tahaan gets Birbal back, go watch the film! All the artists have done tremendously well and credit must be given to Sivan for handling them well. Tahaan is a breath of fresh air amidst the thrillers and slapstick comedies that have been hitting the silver screen lately.
