Bollywood star Salman Khan lost his appeal over a conviction in the wildlife hunt case and was arrested in Jodhpur today. The bad boy of the Indian film industry was convicted for shooting chinkaras last year and was sentenced to five years in prison.
The incident in question took place in 1998 when Salman was shooting for Sooraj Barjatiya's film Hum Saath Saath Hain (We Are Together). Khan was not in court when the appeal was rejected, but his lawyer Dipesh Mehta said Khan would surrender.
Salman Khan arrived at the Jodhpur airport from Mumbai today and was promptly arrested by the waiting police officers. Television images showed him clad in a white-t-shirt and wearing black glasses as he was led away by a posse of policemen.
"He has been arrested at the airport lounge and the arrest warrant was presented to him there," a police official confirmed. Salman had earlier indicated that he planned to surrender in Jodhpur "as a responsible citizen and somebody who abides by the law and respects the judiciary".
Salman Khan also faces two additional cases stemming from the same incident. He is alleged to have shot two chinkaras and two blackbucks over three days at the Ghoda farmhouse in Jodhpur. The blackbuck case is due to be heard in Jodhpur High Court later this month.
Salman's misery is compounded in the blackbuck case because the eyewitnesses, who belong to the Bishnoi community, have pursued him relentlessly in this matter and are unlikely to change their story. Two men of the Bishnoi community filed a complaint against Khan saying they followed his vehicle and saw him shoot the blackbuck.
Officials of the forest department have confirmed that they are able to build a strong case against Salman Khan despite the fact that a local veterinary doctor trying to confuse the issues saying the blackbuck had died because of ‘overeating’ or indigestion.
However the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad was able to confirm that the blackbuck was killed and did not die of natural causes. Salman Khan also faces charges of mowing down man sleeping on a pavement in Mumbai. It is suspected that the incident, which took place in 2002, was a clear case of drunk driving.
One positive news is that even if Salman Khan is jailed for five years his producers will not suffer much. His next film Rumi Jaffery’s God Tussi Great Ho is almost finished as is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. David Dhawan's Tom & Jerry starring Khan and Govinda is yet to hit the floors as is a planned remake of Manmohan Desai’s Amar Akbar Anthony.
Trade analyst Komal Nahata said that about Rs 30-40 crore was depending on Salman Khan when all his films are taken into account.
Meanwhile, Salman's father Salim Khan has said his son was treated harshly because he was a celebrity.
"Even if you are a public figure it does not mean you should get extra punishment ... treat him like any other man," the elder Khan told Times Now news channel.
Khan’s lawyer has said they will appeal at the High Court.
