Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney is the first artist to sign with Hear Music, a new record label being launched by leading coffee house Starbucks. Hear Music is a joint venture of Starbucks and the American music firm Concord Music Group.

Mr McCartney is a free agent and said he looked forward to working with Starbucks. The announcement of a one-album deal was made yesterday at Starbucks’s annual meeting in Seattle. The coffee house chain has previously worked with artists like Ray Charles and Sergio Mendes.

McCartney spoke to shareholders via a giant monitor and said he was working on something for the past few months. "The songs are a little bit retrospective, some are of now, and some hark back to the past. All of them are songs I'm very proud of," he added.

Commenting on Starbucks' commitment to music the ex-Beatle said he was moved by the passion shown, "For me the great thing is the commitment and the passion and the love of music, which as an artist is good to see," he said. "It's a new world now and people are thinking of new ways to reach the people and for me that's always been my aim."

Ken Lombard, president of Starbucks Entertainment said it was remarkable they were able to release an album by Paul McCartney as their maiden Hear Music project. "This demonstrates how Hear Music can present even the most successful recording artists of all time with unique opportunities to reach existing fans, as well as a new audience of listeners," he observed.

Glen Barros, Concord Music president, who will be responsible for the daily activities at Hear Music said the venture "provides us with a unique and powerful way to get music heard."

McCartney's music has received mixed response recently. His “Back in the U.S.” live album sold 994,000 copies domestically Nielsen SoundScan data revealed, while “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard” released in 2005 sold just 530,000 copies.
