Actor Sanjay Dutt was involved in fresh controversy barely days after he was released on bail from the Yerawada jail in Pune. The Bollywood actor visited the Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir late last night to seek divine blessings as he hopes to find a way out of the six-year jail sentence imposed by the TADA Court.
Sanjay, affectionately known as Munnabhai, was accompanied by companion Manyata during this trip. However the controversy is not related to his visiting the religious shrine. Rather it is the red carpet treatment extended by the Jammu & Kashmir government that is under the scanner.
As soon as Dutt landed at the Jammu airport, an Ambassador car fitted with a red beacon. He was also given a police escort for the duration of his stay. The furor centers around the fact that Sanjay is still a convict and has received treatment fit for a VIP.
Dutt though came here to seek blessings for everyone in his life. "Whoever comes to the shrine does not return empty- handed. Everyone knows this. I am sure that Mata will take care of her children," Dutt told reporters. He had earlier visited Shirdi as well.
Earlier several policemen in Pune had got into trouble for shaking his hand and hugging him upon his release from the Yerawada jail. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister RR Patil had ordered a probe into the incident, which resulted in the suspension of one constable. Eight others were issued show cause notices.
The Jammu police is under fire for having provided a government car to the actor yesterday. However Senior Superintendent of Police (Security) A S Bali defended the move by saying that they were informed Congress MP Priya Dutt would be accompanying her brother.
Priya Dutt was indeed scheduled to accompany Sanjay, but reports say she pulled out of the trip as she is pregnant.
Sanjay Dutt's troubles seem to be far from over. The latest twist in the plot only underlines that fact. He is convicted of possessing an illegal firearm during the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. A TADA Court has sentenced him to six years in jail and he is currently out on bail, while he appeals the sentence.
