Telugu Cine star Chiranjeevi’s daughter Sreeja who fled to Delhi with newly wedded husband Sirish and had sought protection from the Delhi High court from her family who opposed her marriage has now made a statement that she does not apprehend any threat from any member of her family.
Nineteen your old Sreeja, Chiranjeevi’s daughter and a student of Chartered Accountancy had made headlines by marrying Sirish, an engineering student and a college mate, against the wishes of her family at an Arya Samaj Mandir in Secunderabad on October 17. Sirish is a Brahmin and his family also is not too happy about the match with another caste member Thereafter the couple had approached the media fearing a backlash from their families.
In a dramatic turn of events, the newly weds fled to Delhi apparently often changing vehicles to avoid detection. On reaching Delhi, they approached the Delhi high Court seeking police protection against the family members especially that of Chiranjeevi who is very influential in Hyderabad. They cited the example of Rizwanur case in Calcutta where recently a inter religion marriage in Kolkata had led to the murder of the groom by the influence of the girl’s family.
Counsel for the couple, Pinky Anand stated before a division bench of Chief Justice MK Sharma, and justice Sanjeev Khanna that the couple were legally married but feared for their lives because Chiranjeevi was an influential person. On Saturday, Chiranjeevi made an emotional appeal to his daughter giving her his blessings and asking her to return home. In filmy fashion, his brother Pavan Kalyan surrendered his US made revolver at Junbille Hills Police station on Monday morning. He made a statement that he wished the couple well wherever they are and that his family had not hired any goondas to cause harm to the couple.
Meanwhile on Monday, the Delhi High court granted police protection to the couple. After this judgment, Sreeja expressed relief and said that she did not perceive any threat from any member of her family. She said she had full respect for her parents and would seek their blessings on her return to Hyderabad under police protection.
The teenager said that the couple would return to Hyderabad and stay at the house of the groom.
