TUESDAY JAN 1, 2008, (News Locale) - Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, who battled a breast cancer to spring back with a roar, has been chosen by Queen Elizabeth II in her annual New Year Honors list for 2008.
The thirty-nine-year-old Minogue has now been appointed to the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the list that was chosen by the Queen on the advice of the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue has sold more than 60 million records worldwide in a music career covering two decades. Minogue struggled to regain health after she was compelled to call off a world tour when she was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.
Deeply touched by the honor vested on her, Minogue said, “I am surprised as I am honored to be awarded the OBE by Her Majesty the Queen. I feel deeply touched to be acknowledged by the UK, my adopted home, in this way.”
A former member of soap opera “Neighbors", Minogue quit the show in 1988 and concentrated on her music career that led her to a series of hits with music producers like Stock, Aitken and Waterman.
During this period, 14 million copies of her album sold worldwide. Two years later, Minogue left Waterman as well as the bubblegum pop to join a British dance record company with a view to get more control on her career. The change helped her to re-discover herself and Minogue came before her fans in a sexier avatar.
Unfortunately, during the second innings, Minogue’s releases failed to appeal to the audience as her previous albums did. In fact, her time was running bad and she was described as all such things like ‘the worst dressed person, worst singer and the second-most horrible thing after spiders’.
It was only in the year 2000 that the pop diva could regain her lost ground and popularity. But by then, she had joined the popular record company Parlophone.
It was all nice and Minouge took up to designing her own lingerie as well as launch her own perfume. However, the disaster came in 2005 when Minogue declared that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Nevertheless, she put up a brave front and took on many successful tours till she split from French actor Oliver Martinez. This was a real heartbreak and increased her pains.
Speaking from her home in Melbourne, where the singer is spending her New Year with he family, Minogue said that during the last year she has received loads of love and support from everyone and this helped her to take greater steps into the public domain.
At the same time, the pop diva said that she looked back at 2007 with gratitude and looks forward to 2008 with new hopes and aspirations.
Every year, the New Year's list recognizes a wide range of people from different walks of life who are considered to have made a positive contribution to British life.
And, according to the British tradition, the Queen hands out a assortment of honors, including knighthoods, life peerages and gallantry awards for those serving in the armed forces and civilians. The list is published in the London Gazette, which happens to be the official newspaper of the British Royalty.
