A couple of weeks back Farah Khan took the audience back in time with her magnum opus celluloid offering ‘Om Shanti Om’ and now it is time for another journey back by the celluloid time machine.
While ‘Om Shanti Om’ depicted the glorious 70s of Bolloywood, director Sudhir Mishra transforms the viewers to the world of Guru Dutt and his contemporaries though his latest offering ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ staring Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan in the lead roles, while Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Sonia Jehan and Saurabh Shukla form the supporting crew.
The storyline of ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ is the tale of Nikhat (Soha Ali Khan) who is an aspiring young actress. Playing the tricks of the film industry, Nikhat enters into a relationship with superstar Prem Kumar (Rajat Kapoor) to get a foothold into Bollywood.
Shiney Ahuja plays Zafar, a scriptwriter who handles the story of the film involving Prem Kumar and Nikhat and impressed by Zafar’s talents superstar Prem assigns him the responsibility of his next project too.
In the meantime, Prem decides to marry some one else and Nikhat, who was under the impression that Prem was in love with her is left dejected. At this stage Zafar comes to Nikhat’s rescue and lends his shoulder to cry on. He even proposes to her, but finally things don’t work out.
It’s a little bit of Guru Dutt-Waheeda Rehaman and Kamal Amrohi-Meena Kumari and the rest is hotchpotch. Needless to say that the story is weak and fails to keep the audience glued.
The film has already attracted much publicity and attention owing to the fact that it is based on the Bollywood of the 50s and 60s. However, neither Mishra nor his stars have been able to utilize this advantage.
Like in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Saawariya’, if one expects to watch the recreation of the golden era of Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman, he or she is sure to be disappointed as the set designing is not up to the expectations. However, Shantanu Moitra does a good job providing some soothing music.
As far as acting is concerned, Shiney Ahuja has done a reasonably good job, but still has a long way to go. Despite being a bundle of talents, Soha Ali Khan, on the other hand, merely adds glamour to the story and nothing else. But then Rajat Kapoor is as good as ever.
