Dharamsala, Aug 30 (ANI): Tibetans in Dharamsala participated in the 'Global Tibet Fast' campaign spearheaded by the Dalai Lama to highlight the "Tibetan cause" today. The 12-hour fast and prayers for peace and freedom is being organised by the Tibetan Solidarity Committee. The Tibetan Prime Minister-in-exile Samdong Rinpoche said that the one-day fast was a part of the prayers for world peace in general and the sufferings in Tibet and China in particular. Tibetan exiles said that they were inspired by the fact that the Dalai Lama is leading the campaign from Mumbai where he has been admitted to a hospital for ill health. The 73-year-old Dalai Lama was admitted to a hospital with "abdominal discomfort". He had cancelled two foreign trips after complaining of fatigue. The Nobel Peace Prize winner had returned to Dharamsala on August 24 after a two-week visit to France mainly to give lectures on Buddhism, but during which he also criticised Chinese policies in Tibet. Kandhamal (Orissa), Aug 30 (ANI): Residents Orissa's Kadhamal district migrates to the neighbouring areas fearing more violence following the killing of VHP leader Laxamananda Saraswati. Recent violence has cast a shadow of fear on the people who live under a constant threat of being attacked. Most of them have started migrating to either the neighbouring districts or to the jungles. "They burnt down our home. It was really scary; we have been living in the jungles since the past five days. My children are crying, they haven't had anything to eat. The other day, it rained when we were hiding in the jungle, the children felt really cold," said Narayani Diggal, a resident. Officials said that efforts are being made to bring back normalcy to the region. "We have already started free kitchen where the persons who are affected, they can come, food is being provided under security. This process has started in seven blocks," said Kishan Kumar, District Collector, Kandhamal. In a backlash to the killing of the VHP leader and four others on Saturday night, the violence has claimed ten lives in Orissa so far. While the police are still carrying out investigations into the killing of the VHP leader, people of the region are living a panic- gripped life. The remote and forested Kandhamal region is rife with religious tension, with hardline Hindus accusing Christian priests of bribing poor tribals and low-caste Hindus to change their faith. Shoot-at-sight orders were issued on Wednesday in eight blocks -- Phulbani, Baliguda, Tumudibandh, Raikia, Nuagaon, G Udaygiri, Tikabali and Sankarakhol of Kandhamal District. (ANI)

Islamabad, Aug.30 (ANI): Pakistan People's Party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari is reportedly under the influence of a small group of close advisers, and they are preventing him from restoring Justice Iftikhar's judiciary, party sources told The News. According to the paper, the group has now adopted a novel strategy to get rid of unwanted judges. A top PPP leader said Prime Minister Gilani and all sincere senior leaders are acting as obstacles to Law Minister Farooq Naek's bid to reappoint the deposed judges. Naek is of the view that the PCO judges in the Supreme Court would have to go back to their respective high courts in order to get back to the November 3, 2007 situation in accordance with the Murree Declaration. A senior PPP leader told The News it was a wrong perception that Zardari still had fears the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) would be abolished once the deposed judges got restored. "It will take a maximum of two months for Zardari and others to get acquitted from all the cases and that too through a legal process," senior PPP leaders said. "I believe some close aides of Zardari have made the restoration of Justice Iftikhar an issue out of personal ego and consistently urge him (Asif Zardari) not to restore him," one of them said. The senior leader maintained this group wanted to get rid of all the honourable and upright deposed judges in their bid to avoid any future accountability. Another senior PPP leader, however, denied that the intensifying rift in the PPP could have an effect on the presidential election. He said despite many differences, all party legislators would vote for the party's nominated candidate. (ANI)

Colombo, Aug.30 (ANI): Sri Lanka's Air Force has begun dropping leaflets urging civilians to leave the country's northern areas, which are presently under the control of the Tamil Tiger rebels. According to the BBC, the move comes ahead of what is expected to be a fight to the finish in Sri Lanka's protracted civil war. Aid agencies say 134,000 displaced people are in Kilinochchi District alone, where the rebels have their administrative headquarters. More than half of them have abandoned their homes in the last three months. The military has advanced rapidly into Tiger territory during that time. Residents of Kilinochchi confirmed that they had seen a helicopter flying low overhead on Friday night, dropping thousands of leaflets. The leaflets, written in Tamil, said the rebels were facing huge defeats and urged civilians to save their lives by leaving for government-held territory. A spokesman for Sri Lanka's Air force, Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara, said more leaflets had been scattered in the area. (ANI)
