New York, Oct.16 (ANI): Republican candidate John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama slugged it out over the faltering U.S. economy, taxes, energy policy and character in their third and final presidential debate on Wednesday night.

McCain took an aggressive approach, but once again, neither man landed a knockout punch nor committed a major gaffe, reports CBS.

"John McCain turned in an energetic, focused and, at times, emotional performance," said CBSNews.com senior political editor Vaughn Ververs.

"But he needed something more in order to change the underlying dynamics of this race. Obama was solid, on-message and mostly mistake free, likely stunting any major gains for the Republican. McCain may have righted the ship to some extent, but time is running out for him to make up ground," he added.

The encounter began with an exchange on the economy. Both men said the 700 billion dollar bailout was not enough.

McCain said Americans are hurting and they're angry. He said they are the innocent victims of greed on Wall Street. McCain said, "We've got to put the homeowners first."

Obama said what the nation hasn't seen yet is a rescue plan for the middle class. He said the top focus should be on jobs.

As the debate unfolded, McCain accused Obama of waging class warfare by advocating tax increases designed to "spread the wealth around." The Democrat denied it, and countered that he favors tax reductions for 95 percent of all Americans.

"Nobody likes taxes," Obama said in an exchange early in the third and final presidential debate of a campaign nearing its end. "But ultimately we've got to pay for the core investments" necessary for the economy.

"If nobody likes taxes, let's not raise anybody's, OK?" McCain retorted with a laugh.

The 90-minute debate at Hofstra University focused on the economy and domestic policy. The candidates were seated at a table with moderator Bob Schieffer, CBS News' chief Washington correspondent.

McCain, eager to stress his differences with an unpopular president, also said he was disappointed that the Bush administration has not embraced his 300 billion dollar proposal to renegotiate mortgages so homeowners can remain in their homes.

"Sen. Obama, I am not President Bush," he declared at another point. "If you wanted to run against President Bush, you should have run four years ago."

Obama said he agreed the government must help homeowners trapped in the current economic crisis, but he said, "The way Sen. McCain has designed his plan, it could be a giveaway to banks."

The two men also traded charges that departed from the core issues of the economy, energy and taxes.

"One hundred percent, John, of your ads, 100 percent of them have been negative," Obama told his rival, seated only a few feet away at a round table.

"That's not true," McCain retorted.

"It is true," said Obama, seeking the last word.

McCain is currently running all negative ads, according to a study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. But he has run a number of positive ads during the campaign.

Behind in the polls, McCain played the aggressor early and often.

He demanded to know the full extent of Obama's relationship with William Ayres, a 1960s-era terrorist, the Democrat's ties with ACORN, a liberal group accused of violating federal law as it seeks to register voters, and insisted Obama disavow last week's remarks by Rep. John Lewis, a Democrat, who accused the Republican ticket of playing racial politics along the same lines as segregationists of the past.

Obama returned each volley, and brushed aside McCain's claim to full political independence.

"If I've occasionally mistaken your policies for George Bush's policies, it's because on the core economic issues that matter to the American people - on tax policy, on energy policy, on spending priorities - you have been a vigorous supporter of President Bush," he said.

Asked about running mates, both presidential candidates said Democrat Joseph Biden was qualified to become president, although McCain qualified his judgment by adding the words "in many respects."

McCain passed up a chance to say his own running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was qualified to sit in the Oval Office, though he praised her performance as governor. Obama sidestepped when asked, saying it was up to the voters to decide.

Obama entered the debate with a wide lead over McCain nationally, a new CBS News/New York Times poll shows. The Obama-Biden ticket now leads the McCain-Palin ticket 53 percent to 39 percent among likely voters, a 14-point margin, according to the poll. (ANI)

Kuala Lumpur, Oct.15 (ANI): Malaysia will station a labour attache in Chennai, Tamil Nadu from next year to facilitate the smooth intake of foreign workers from India. The New Strait Times quoted Malaysian Human Resources Minister Dr. S. Subramaniam as saying that Chennai was chosen as a majority of workers from India were sourced from Tamil Nadu.

Subramaniam said the labour attache would be able to assist recruitment agencies there on a host of issues including employment rules, immigration regulations, laws of the country, culture, customs, accommodation and the role of agents.

"The attache will also help provide induction courses for prospective workers intending to come to Malaysia. This is to ensure that foreign workers do not run foul of the law when employed here," he said.

"It will also give them a better understanding of what to expect in Malaysia and get settled comfortably," Subramaniam added after a meeting with India's Overseas Indian Affairs and Parliament Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi yesterday.

There are an estimated 138, 000 registered foreign workers from India employed in Malaysia mainly in the service, agriculture, information technology and manufacturing sectors.

Subramaniam said both governments would sign a bilateral agreement by January to establish a joint committee on labour issues affecting their workers.

Ravi said the joint committee would coordinate and provide avenues for technical training for workers from both India and Malaysia, who wished to gain employment through the proper channels.

"We want both countries to benefit and not allow their workers to be caught in any wrangles." (ANI)

Kuala Lumpur, Oct.15 (ANI): Malaysia and India will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the exchange of workers between both countries in New Delhi in December.

A Malaysia Nanban report quoted Malaysian Human Resources Minister S. Subramaniam as saying that the MOU would outline the role of agents, working conditions and the need to follow the laws of both nations.

He said the pact would also allow for the setting up of a joint committee to deal with the movement of workers.

Dr. Subramaniam was speaking to reporters after meeting India's Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday. (ANI)

Kuala Lumpur, Oct.15 (ANI): Three Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) leaders were questioned by police on Tuesday on the alleged "illegal assembly" at the Muslim ministers' Hari Raya open house at the Putra World Trade Centre earlier this month.

According to a New Strait Times report, S. Jayathas, K. Selvam and K. Santhi, who is the wife of the movement's chairman P. Waythamoorthy, were questioned at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.

They entered the police station about 3 p.m. local times accompanied by their lawyers N. Surendran and Latheefa Koya.

Speaking to reporters an hour later, Surendran said his clients invoked Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, which meant they did not answer any of the questions put to them by the investigating officer Assistant Superintendent Sydney Clyde Jeremiah.

"The set of 28 questions which my clients were asked suggested they had committed no offence," he said.

The three were served notices last week to present themselves for questioning at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.(ANI)

Chechar (Chhattisgarh), Oct 15 (ANI): Authorities have deployed heavy security in a village in Chhattisgarh to prevent residents from glorifying the 71-year-old woman who immolated herself by jumping into her husband's burning pyre.

Lalmati Verma, 71, of Chechar village, had immolated herself on October 11 after mourners had left the cremation site, becoming a 'Sati'.

Villagers later thronged the funeral site and offered prayers in an act of worship.

Policemen are patrolling the streets of village, which has a temple dedicated to a woman, who became 'Sati' some 40 years' ago. People here are still rooted in the belief that such women should be worshipped.

To put a dampener on Lalmati's worship by the villagers, scores of policemen have been stationed at the funeral site as well.

The residents, who seemed eager to worship Lalmati are now afraid to do so because of the fear of police.

"The villagers had gone and offered flowers and coconuts at the funeral where she was burnt. They started worshipping her like a goddess. Now, the villagers would not do any such thing as they are afraid of the police," said Budhram, aesident.

The police had arrested seven members of Lalmati's family under the Prevention of Sati Act, for not preventing her from self-immolation. They have also threatened strict action against anybody who indulged in worship or glorification of Lalmati.

"The facts that have come to light during the investigations have revealed that the villagers offered prayers at the funeral site. We will take strict action against anybody who indulges in such practices henceforth," said S.K. Mandawi, station house officer (SHO), police station, Kasdol.

The practice of 'Sati', in which a woman burns herself to death on her husband's pyre, began in medieval times when Hindu women chose to kill themselves after their husbands died in battle rather than be taken prisoner by invaders.

'Sati' was banned by British colonial authorities in 1829 but such incidents have been happening from time to time in rural areas, where it is common to find people who revere the practice as the ultimate demonstration of female honor, devotion and piety. (ANI)
