Chicago, Oct.18 (ANI): If the Washington Post took the lead on Thursday in being the first to endorse Barack Obama as the next President of the United States, then on Friday, it was the turn of the Chicago-based Sun Times to follow suit.

In an editorial, the paper says that with the Americans ready to be one country and yearning to bridge their differences, to find common cause, to rise above ideology, race, class and religion, Obama seems the ideal person to don the mantle of the 44th President of the United States.

The paper says that if America had preferred a master of policy for its next president, New York's junior Senator Hillary Clinton would have won the Democratic nomination. If America valued experience in public life above all else, then Senator John McCain would be trouncing Senator Obama in the polls.

"But it is Senator Obama who won his party's nomination, and it is he who leads in the polls. Americans across the land want to pull together, and in Senator Obama they see a man of exceptional gifts who just might show them how," says the Sun Times.

"Our endorsement for president of the United States goes to Sen. Barack Obama, Chicago's adopted son. He has the unique background, superior intellect, sound judgment and first-rate temperament to lead our nation in difficult times," it adds.

Examining Obama's strengths, it says that he has a remarkable talent for hearing all the disparate voices of America, and guided by his cross-cultural instincts, he has climbed the ladder of Chicago Democratic politics - from community organizer to state senator to U.S. senator - while dodging the tag of "machine-made."

The paper says that what has to be admired is the fact that Obama has developed alliances not only with the old Harold Washington coalition, but also with party stalwarts such as State Sen. Emil Jones. He mostly steered clear of unwise political entanglements, and when he did use poor judgment, he learned from his mistake.

It says that the senator has learned to appreciate the enormous importance of transparency in politics.

The paper also agrees Obama on many of the most pressing issues of the day, whether it be America being open to talking to its adversaries, or his prescriptions for the economy. Obama is right on energy policy, and the paper supports his proposals to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil by a host of means - domestic drilling and nuclear energy, and promotion of the use of wind power, solar power and other forms of "clean" energy.

According to the Sun Times, from the moment he announced his candidacy in Springfield in February 2007, he has demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills, grace under fire, laudable restraint and a sincere respect for the intelligence of the voter. He has surrounded himself with excellence - imagine such competence moving into the West Wing - and built what is perhaps the most effective ground organization in the history of presidential campaigns.

Sen. Obama writes his own best speeches. He refuses to play the "gotcha" game. He runs his own campaign - it does not run him.

He has kept his cool while his opponent runs hot and cold. He shook off the advice from his senior advisers to "go negative" when the polls were more grim, the way President Kennedy coolly rejected the overly bellicose advice of his generals in the heat of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Sadly, the same cannot be said of Senator John McCain.

The paper describes him as an American hero, but says that somewhere along the line, McCain stopped being McCain. "He reversed his position on major social issues to curry favor with the Republican base. He pulled silly surprises from a hat, such as "suspending" his campaign. Most egregiously for a man of advanced age who knew how important this decision could be, he chose the unqualified Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his vice president," says the paper.

The paper concludes by saying: "The times again demand an extraordinary leader. Our next president will take the oath of office in a country that is at war, heavily in debt, deeply divided and sliding into a recession. He will have to make hard choices - the money won't be there for all his ambitious plans - and he will have to work with a Congress so lopsidedly Democratic that it may be veto-proof," and in Obama, there is "the strength of character, the steady temperament, the intellect, the compassion, the ability to see through others' eyes", to do all this.

"Barack Obama believes in the audacity of hope. He inspires it in others. He inspires it in us. Barack Obama should be the next president of the United States of America." (ANI)

Islamabad, Oct 18 (ANI): Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf has reportedly decided to take to full time politics. But, he would do this only after moving into his new farmhouse at Chak Shahzad. Sources said he doesn't want to misuse the Army House for political purposes.

"I don't want to make the Army House a hub of political activities because of its unique nature, but my political headquarter will be my personal residence once I shift there," The News quoted some of the visitors (who met Musharraf) as saying.

One of them asked him about the political platform on which he would fall back to which the former president posed a counter question: Will the PML-Q not be available to him for the purpose?, reported the paper

To this, the visitor pointed out to him that it would all depend on the Chaudhrys of Gujrat, who were in charge of the PML-Q, to allow him the use of their party's platform for his politics. He also mentioned that in the last few weeks of his rule his relations with the Chaudhrys had been seriously dented because Musharraf had wanted to dump Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as the PML-Q president.

The visitor further said that the Chaudhry brothers were no more frequent visitors of Musharraf's residence thinking that he was of no more of any consequence politically.

Another visitor, who is a former federal minister and worked with Musharraf for five years, said the former president was too optimistic about his "political standing and future", despite the fact that he was "deadwood" now and has no political prospects whatsoever.

However, the visitor said that Musharraf was very "disappointed" over the performance of the present government and told him that on the request of the previous finance minister (Ishaq Dar) he had talked to China for financial support that had been provided.

He said he wondered what had Musharraf in his pocket to be so confident about himself. He said his state was no different from what it used to be when he was holding the top office. The former minister said Musharraf told him that he was planning to undertake visits to some foreign countries in the near future and his first stop would be Saudi Arabia where he would also perform Umra. Beijing, Oct 18 (ANI): China has decided to continue with the relaxed rules for foreign journalists operating from the country. The relaxed rules which were temporarily adopted for the Beijing Games, allowed the foreign journalists to conduct interviews of individuals or organizations without prior permission from the local foreign affairs office.

The rules, adopted on January 1, 2007, were to expire yesterday, but they were re-implemented at late night press conference organized just 15 minutes before the expiry (of the temporary Olympic rules).

"The new rules follow the major principles and spirits of the media regulations introduced for the Beijing Olympics. In the form of a long-lasting law, the 23-item new rules make that temporary arrangement a standard practice. The new regulations are significantly different from those issued in 1990," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said at a late night press conference.

Foreign reporters wishing to interview organizations or individuals in China no longer need to be received and accompanied by the Chinese organizations, Xinhua quoted Liu as saying.

The new rules canceled an item in the old version that asked foreign reporters to get approval from the local government's foreign affairs department when they wanted to do reporting in the regions open to them. The new rules also lifted an item asking them to get approval from the Foreign Ministry when they wanted to visit the regions not open to them and register at the police.

"Foreign reporters still need to ask for permission to do reporting in Tibet and other areas that are off-limits to foreign reporters, like some military facilities," Liu said.

According to the new rules, permanent offices of foreign media and reporters can "temporarily" import, install and use radio communication devices for news reporting after gaining approvals from the Chinese government according to laws.

The new rules said: "China adopts a basic policy of opening up to the outside world, protects the lawful rights and interests of the permanent offices of foreign media organizations and foreign journalists in accordance with law, and facilitates their news coverage and reporting activities that are carried out according to law."

The rules also asked resident foreign reporters to apply for a press card to the Foreign Ministry or local foreign affairs departments within seven working days after their arrival in China. With press cards, they also need to get residency cards from the local police where they are to stay.

Press cards of those who stay in China for less than six months every year will be revoked, the document said. Resident foreign reporters or those for short-term news reporting in China shall apply a journalist visa. (ANI)

Lahore, Oct 18 (ANI): In a bid to train the Pakistani forces how to fight out the Taliban, the US military has begun a training effort inside Pakistan this week. The training programne was a part of the US' "promise' to help Pakistan in fighting Taliban in the Tribal Areas, report the Christian Science Monitor (CSM).

It said that the US deployed a small unit of about 30 special-forces personnel in Pakistan this week to bolster the Frontier Corps (FC) to fight Taliban.

The report said that the security personnel team was significant "not for its size, but for the expectation that it could give Pakistan the tools to fight Taliban on its own."

The US wanted a 'Pakistani face' to the counter-Taliban efforts, added the report.

It further said that the long-proposed sale of new and refurbished F-16 jet fighters to Pakistan had become "so critical to the Bush administration", which believes the old fleet of fighters the Pakistani Air Force is using now aren't effective.

However, the US Congress was not sure that Islamabad could be 'trusted to use the planes' against tribal Taliban.

It said the US Congress members wanted to know why Pakistan would need a jet fighter with 'air-to-air' fighter capability "when all the Pakistanis really need to fight Taliban from the air is a plane or helicopter with 'air-to-ground' or 'close air support' capabilities". (ANI)

London, October 18 (ANI): A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife over a posting she made on the social networking site Facebook.

Wayne Forrester, 34, was very upset to find that his wife Emma, 34, had changed her online profile to "single", just days after he had moved out, said police.

He drove her home in Croydon, south London, and stabbed her with a kitchen knife and a meat cleaver on 18 February, revealed the sources.

Forrester, who pleaded guilty to murder, was ordered to serve a minimum term of 14 years.

"You committed a terrible act. There is no possible excuse or justification. This is a tragic killing and what you have done has caused untold anguish," the BBC quoted Judge Brian Barker, the Common Serjeant of London, as telling him.

Forrester, an HGV driver, was drunk and high on cocaine when he attacked his wife in the early hours as she slept. He beat her, tore out clumps of her hair, and repeatedly stabbed her in the head and neck.

The screams of the mother of two awoke neighbours, who called the police after finding Forrester sitting outside the house covered in blood.

The court heard Forrester thought that Emma was having an affair, and had threatened to kill her.

The couple's 15-year marriage was said to be a "volatile" one. (ANI)
