Washington, Sept.26 (ANI): Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and his party colleagues have blasted Republican rival John McCain for backing out of talks aimed at finding a solution to the current meltdown on Wall Street.

Aides and officials attending a White House Summit meeting here on Thursday said the discussion ended badly, with Democrats fuming at House Republicans over their refusal to drop objections to the administration's 700 billion dollar bail out proposal.

McCain, who on Wednesday announced he was suspending his campaign to work on the negotiations, was particularly targeted.

"Here's my observation and I think this may have been confirmed at the meeting today - when you inject presidential politics into delicate negotiations, sometimes it's not helpful. The cameras change things," Obama told FOX News after the meeting ended.

"It's not clear to me that having presidential candidates in a high-profile way in the negotiating process is useful," he added.

Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill were more blunt.

"He's (McCain) slowed it down," Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., said.

"The next thing we know, he's in a position frankly where he's making it harder to get things done, rather than help us negotiate differences," Frank added.

McCain's campaign countered that he merely called for the final plan to have Americans' confidence.

The campaign claimed that Obama's presence disrupted the meeting.

"The Democrats allowed Senator Obama to run their side of the meeting," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said in a written statement released Thursday night.

"That did not work, as the meeting quickly devolved into a contentious shouting match that did not seek to craft a bipartisan solution," he added.

McCain on Wednesday also called for the kickoff presidential debate scheduled for Friday to be postponed, but Obama reiterated his position Thursday that the debate should go forward.

"One of us is going to be in charge of this mess in four months, and the American people, I think, not only have a right but an obligation to find out where we want to take the country," Obama said at a press conference. "My hope is that the debate goes forward and I intend to be there."

His campaign circulated a memo shortly after the White House meeting ended accusing McCain of disingenuously suspending his campaign.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid accused McCain of saying nothing substantive in the White House meeting.

McCain, for his part, said Congress and the Bush administration are making progress toward an agreement on a rescue of the financial sector.

Senior adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer told FOX News that the disagreement on Capitol Hill on Thursday could have been expected, and it was that looming discord that prompted McCain to head to Washington in the first place. (ANI)

London, Sept 26 (ANI): Austrian incest fiend Josef Fritzl has returned to his house of horror for the first time since his arrest.

The 72-year-old was released from jail yesterday for the visit.

He was also questioned over the grim secrets of the cellar where he imprisoned and raped daughter Elisabeth for 24 years. While on his way back home, Josef was calmly reading a book.

He then used it to cover his face as he walked up the drive.

"He had lost a lot of hair. Other than that he looked pretty similar," the Sun quoted a neighbour, as saying.

Fritzl kept Elisabeth, 42, as a sex slave and fathered her seven children, one of whom died, in Amstetten, Austria.

Three of the kids lived upstairs with Fritzl and his wife Rosemarie, 69.

Police kept Fritzl at the house - which has 66 rooms - for three hours.

He was asked why he made structural changes to the layout of the building. Later he was taken into the garden.

The neighbour said: "He didn't show any emotion. He talked to the police who were pointing things out in the garden, then they went inside again."

Fritzl's secret dungeon was entered through eight locked doors, many fitted with alarms and sensors.

According to senior legal sources, Fritzl faces up to 3,000 rape charges. (ANI)

United Nations, Sept 26 (ANI): Pakistan will continue the composite dialogue process with India initiated by erstwhile Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf in order to resolve the outstanding issues with the neighbouring country, said Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari in his UN address in New York last evening.

He said that both India and Pakistan must respect each other and work to peacefully resolve all outstanding issues.

"We will continue the composite dialogue with India so that our outstanding disputes are resolved. Whether it is the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir, or co-operation on water resources, India and Pakistan must accommodate each other's concerns and interests, we must respect and work with each other to peacefully resolve our problems and build South Asia into a common market of trade and technology," the Daily Times quoted Zardari as saying.

Zardari's comments assume significance even as he has just taken over as his country's head of the state and also because this is his first-hand experience of presenting his vies before the world from the UN platform. (ANI)

Islamabad, Sept 26 (ANI): The Pakistan Government is said to be planning a reorientation programme for the print as well as electronic media to encourage them to avoid publishing, airing or telecasting reports glorifying the acts of terror or those behind them.

A request to the media would be made to conduct an exercise on its own to see how to discourage reporting and comments that glorify terrorists and portray them as heroes, said Farhatullah Babar, the official PPP spokesman.

"Of course the media needs to be careful as far as glorification of the terrorist and the harassment of people by reporting and commentaries is concerned," he added.

Some quarters of the government have been suggesting that a clampdown on certain sections of the media that "refuse to listen to reason" in this connection be planned. "However, the saner element in the government prevailed and sought permission of the president and the prime minister to first launch an in-house exercise by print and electronic media and ensure that such reporting and commentaries are avoided," The News quoted Babar as saying.

Besides, according to the paper, the federal government also plans to step up information and prevention of the extortions made on behalf of the terrorist outfits like the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and others.

In Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad extortions was being made by certain elements from traders on behalf of the terrorist organizations the same way as in Swat, Waziristan and Peshawar.

Sources in the country's Interior Ministry said that such reports were under compilation and a final report would soon be presented to the interior ministry high-ups for further action.

On how such acts would be prevented, a Pakistani official said that reporting and follow-up action by security agencies could stop this practice. He added that the police and other agencies might launch surveys to collect first-hand information from shopkeepers. (ANI)

London, Sept.26 (ANI): European Union regulators on Thursday ordered rigorous testing of imports containing at least 15 percent milk powder after concluding that food containing tainted milk powder from China may well be circulating in Europe and putting children at risk.

The action, announced by the European Food Safety Authority and the European Commission, significantly expands the potential geographic reach of a milk adulteration scandal in China to now include a range of foods sold around the world, reports the New York Times.

The Europeans said cookies, toffees and chocolates were the major concerns.

The World Health Organization and UNICEF also expressed concern on Thursday about the Chinese milk contamination and the implications for other foods.

In the United States, some consumer groups called on the Food and Drug Administration to restrict imports of foods that may contain suspected dairy ingredients from China.

In China, milk products contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine have sickened more than 50,000 young children in recent weeks and created a spiraling government scandal.

While it is illegal to import dairy products and baby formula from China into the European Union, European nations can and do import many processed foods containing milk powder as an ingredient that are manufactured outside of Europe. Such products could contain milk powder from China.

In 2007, the European Union imported from China about 19,500 tons of confectionary products, including pastries, cake and cookies, and about 1,250 tons of chocolate and other prepared foods containing cocoa.

In the United States, some consumer groups called for stricter regulation as well.

The United States has imported two million pounds of a milk protein called casein this year, along with other powdered milk proteins that are used as ingredients in many processed foods, according to figures from the United States Department of Agriculture.

This includes 293,000 pounds that were imported in July. The Food and Drug Administration did not immediately return calls for comment on Thursday.

Melamine is a chemical used in plastic manufacturing that can be added to foods to artificially increase their protein content in testing. Its presence was detected in pet foods originating from China last year.

Even if present in foods in Europe, milk powder contaminated with melamine is not likely to cause the kind of public health disaster that is occurring among Chinese infants.

In China, babies drank contaminated milk powder as their sole source of nutrition for weeks if not months, and a handful have died. (ANI)
