The skeletal remains of a three-foot long woman points to an entirely new species of humans, and not just someone with stunted growth, a team of scientists said. The remains found in the remote island of Flores in Indonesia back in 2003 were termed by some scientists as a stunted version of other prehistoric humans. A team of scientists then compared the skull of the fossil, nicknamed as "Hobbit", with nine other skulls of humans known to be affected with microcephaly, a rare condition in which the head is abnormally small due to improper brain development. At the end of the study, the scientists concluded that the 3-foot-tall woman had a highly evolved brain and was in no way affected by microcephaly. Dean Falk, from Florida State University who led the research, said, "It's not showing the shape of microcephaly. So we nailed that, we think. In addition, we can say that there are other special features which are unique and set it apart from anyone else."

A frozen ocean may be the best chance of finding life on Mars if it exists, according to a team of British scientists. This ocean was detected by the European Space Agency's Mars Express probe in a Martian region believed to be the site of violent volcanoes. This area is just about the size of the North Sea, according to the researchers at the University College London. They suggest that water may have seeped through the fissures and could have carried microbes with it when it froze over 5 million years ago.

Google Inc. announced the upgraded version of its Mini search device with additional security features which will allow companies to search for both public and private data on their networks. Unveiling Mini 2.2 version on Tuesday, Roberto Solimene, Google's European enterprise director, said that companies can now either index public-facing Web sites or index internal intranets and documents. "For the Google Mini 2.2, we are removing that limitation. Small companies can have the full power of a GSA (the full-size Google Search Appliance) in a Mini. You can now have a secure index, including LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) and Active Directory data, so that even small companies can index information that other users are not supposed to find", he added.
