That in fact is the million dollar question as far as women in their 40s are concerned. Over the last fortnight they have got confusing reports from two leading organizations. The American Cancer Society recommended MRI breast scan to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage, but the American College of Physicians issued a new set of guidelines saying mammography decisions should be based on individual cases and not generalized.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) following menopause is a double-edged sword at best. While it does relieve the more unpleasant effects like hot flushes, the excess hormones also increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and breast cancer. A reassessment of the Women's Health Initiative study, which sounded the alarm on hormone therapy in 2002, has found that it is safer in younger women if they start it soon after menopause.

Blood transfusion may never be the same again if a discovery by Danish researchers is proved safe and effective in humans. Researchers at the University of Copenhagen have used newly discovered enzymes to eliminate the incompatibility of blood groups A, B and AB by converting these blood groups into the universal donor group O.

The World Health Organization and the U.N. AIDS agency officially recommended male circumcision as a way to fight HIV/AIDS. Countries that have AIDS on an epidemic scale must begin offering subsidized circumcisions in order to ward off millions of potential new infections, the agencies said.

Asthma sufferers had good news in the form of a new drug free heat treatment that promises to alleviate their symptoms faster and make breathing much easier. The procedure called bronchial thermoplasty showed promise in helping moderate to severe asthma sufferers gain control over their disease.
