Washington, Oct 31 (ANI): No matter when babies start talking, a new study has claimed that infants' brains become acquainted with hundreds of words much before they start uttering them. The report, published in the October issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, describes an increasing emphasis among researchers in studying vocabulary development in infants.

The report by University of Pennsylvania psychologist Daniel Swingley was mainly focussed on studying vocabulary development in infants.

For their study, the researchers tracked infants' eye movements while they are looking at two objects (for example, an apple and a dog) and observed if the child looked at the right object when it was mispronounced.

The results indicated that the children were less likely to look at the correct object when it was mispronounced, indicating that by one year of age, children are able to recognize mispronunciations of words.

This new research in language acquisition indicates that infants learn the forms of many words and they begin to gather information about how these forms are used.

According to the authors of the study, "these word forms then become the foundation of the early vocabulary, support children's learning of the language's phonological system, and contribute to the discovery of grammar."

The researchers found that infants have a unique ability to discriminate speech-sound (phonetic) differences, but over time they lose this skill for differentiating sounds in languages other than their native tongue. For instance, 6 month old babies who were learning English were able to distinguish between similar-sounding Hindi consonants not found in English, but they lost this ability by the time they were 12 months of age.

The study has shown that during infancy, babies learn not only individual speech sounds but also the auditory forms of words, i.e., babies are not only aware of the pieces that make up a word, but they are aware of the entire word.

These auditory forms of words allow children to increase their vocabulary and help them to eventually develop grammar.

One more interesting finding of the study was that although children learning a language can distinguish between long and short vowels, they interpret this difference according to the rules of their language. For instance, Dutch 18-month-olds considered tam and taam to be different words, while English 18-month-olds did not-showing children's early learning of how each language uses vowel length.

The new study in language acquisition showed that infants learn the forms of many words and they begin to gather information about how these forms are used.

The author concluded that "testing very young children's ability to interpret spoken language, whether by identifying novel words as novel or by comprehending sentences, may prove a more sensitive predictor of children's language outcomes than simpler tests of speech-sound categorization."

The study was published in the October issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. (ANI)

Melbourne, Nov.21 (ANI): Several imams in the Australian state of Victoria have condoned rape and domestic violence within marriage, exploitation of women, welfare fraud and polygamy.

According to a report commissioned and funded by the former coalition government and produced by the Islamic Welfare Council of Victoria, some Victorian imams apply Sharia law only where it benefits men; hinder police investigations of domestic violence claims; and knowingly perform polygamous marriages, which allow a second wife to claim Centrelink ayments because they are regarded as de facto wives under Australian law.

The study was based on extensive community consultation; interviews with police, lawyers, court staff and academics, and meetings and interviews with the Victorian Board of Imams, Fairfax said.

The report said the 24-man board ignored or did not directly answer many of the questions put to it.

Women, community and legal workers and police said they were concerned about domestic violence and said imams put the interest of families ahead of women.

Relatives and community members sometimes pressured women to drop domestic violence cases, the report said.

The imams' narrow religious training, lack of life experience, poor English and a lack of understanding of Australia caused problems, some quoted in the report said. (ANI)

Mohali, Oct.21 (ANI): Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting on Tuesday hailed India's victory against his team in the second Test that was played here.

Describing India as nice and aggressive right from the start of the match Ponting said that his opponents were deserving winners.

He was speaking after Australia crashed to its heaviest defeat in terms of runs in a decade. Australia lost the match by 320 runs. It was its greatest losing margin in terms of runs since Mark Taylor's side succumbed to India by an innings and 219 in Calcutta in 1997-98.

Right from the first morning India were nice and aggressive. they took the momentum away from us early in the game. They thoroughly deserve their victory and congratulations to them," said Ponting.

"They have thoroughly outplayed us in every aspect I think. We'll probably have a couple of days off after this, back to back matches are always hard. We'll fine-tune our skills before the next Test. The are a very good bowling attack, their two seamers were terrific and they used the reverse swing well," he added.

Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan led his side's charge against the Australians with the ball, taking three of the five wickets to fall on the fifth morning. he sent off wicket keeper Brad Haddin, leg-spinner Cameron White and fast bowler Brett Lee.

However, Khan earned an appointment with the match referee for his send-off of Matthew Hayden in the second innings. Zaheer was charged for engaging in conduct contary to the spirit of the game, for sending off Matthew Hayden when he fell to Harbhajan Singh in the over before tea on Monday.

Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke played a lone hand in trying to keep his team in the game till the end of the match. His struggle ended when he pulled leg-spinner Amit Mishra to mid-wicket where he was caught by Virender Sehwag for a well made 69 in four hours at the crease.

Sehwag lifted Tendulkar off the ground in delight at seizing a 1-0 series lead ahead of the remaining Tests in New Delhi and Nagpur.

In the end the Australians lasted 28.4 overs on the fifth day.

Hayden has endured a dreadful tour, with scores of 0,13, 0 and 29 in the first two Tests, and has fallen to Zaheer on three occasions. Having made a blazing start on Monday, he gestured to umpire Rudi Koertzen as Zaheer and his teammates sent him on his way.

Zaheer will face match referee Chris Broad in a post-match hearing, and if found guilty of the level two offence can be fined between 50 and 100 per cent of his match fee or banned for a Test.(ANI)
