New York, Sep 6 (ANI): Sprinter Marion Jones was released from a federal detention facility after completing a six-month sentence for lying to federal agents investigating the BALCO doping conspiracy.

Jones was released at 8 a.m. on Friday, said LaTanya Robinson, an officer at the San Antonio community corrections office, which oversees halfway houses such as the one Jones was in.

Jones, 32, must now complete 800 hours of community service and will be on probation for two years.

She was one of the most dominant Olympic sprinters in history at the time the BALCO ring was uncovered in the fall of 2004.

Even as evidence of her drug use piled up over the years, she repeatedly and angrily denied doping, right up until she abruptly confessed in the fall of 2007, pleading guilty and making a tearful apology outside a courthouse.

Jones also admitted to lying about a check-fraud scheme involving her fellow sprinter Tim Montgomery, the father of her older son Monty.

Montgomery received a 46-month sentence earlier this year.

In early May, Jones reported to a correctional facility in Fort Worth, Tex., and was assigned the inmate number 8486-8/054. Since Aug. 19, she has been at a halfway house in San Antonio. (ANI)

Washington, Sep 6 (ANI): Iraqi leaders and officials have expressed disappointment over a report that US had spied on Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other top leaders.

"If it is true, it reflects that there is no trust and it reflects also that the institutions in the United States are used to spying on their friends and their enemies in the same way," said Ali al-Dabbagh, spokesman of the Iraqi Government.

"We will ask for an explanation," the Washington Post quoted Dabbagh, as saying.

Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward wrote about the reported espionage in his fourth book about the Bush Administration, "The War Within: A Secret White House History, 2006-2008," which is scheduled to be released Monday.

The Post published an article Friday about some of Woodward's findings.

Some Iraqi officials said the revelation is likely to hinder already contentious negotiations toward an agreement that would govern the role of US troops in Iraq after the expiration in December of the UN mandate that allows them to operate in Iraq.

"It is going to affect the level of trust between us as two parties," said Abbas al-Bayati, an Iraqi lawmaker who acts as a spokesman for the United Iraqi Alliance, a Shiite political coalition that includes Maliki's party.

"Spying is usually done when one party is hiding something, and we know the Iraqi government has nothing to hide from the Americans," he added.

Bayati said he was dumbfounded by the report. "I see no reason for them to spy on Iraqi leaders, because they are in constant touch with the US Embassy and the military hierarchy, and we're always meeting continuously with them at the highest and lowest levels," the lawmaker said.

Bassam Sharif, a spokesman for the Shiite Fadhila Party, said the revelation didn't come as a total surprise.

"We all know that all communications are under the supervision of Americans," he added. (ANI)

Lahore, Sept 6 (ANI): Ahead of the much anticipated win of their party's Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari in today's presidential poll, the PPP workers have made elaborate arrangements to celebrate the victory in advance.

After visiting the shrine of Data Ganj Bakhsh at 4.00 pm today, a large number of PPP workers will distribute sweets after Iftar this evening. Later in the night, there will be illumination and display of fireworks at PPP offices, the Dawn quoted the elated PPP workers as saying.

Last evening, Manzoor Wattoo, the adviser to the prime minister, threw an Iftar dinner for PPP MPAs and urged them to vote for the party's presidential candidate Asif Ali Zardari.

Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer also urged the MPAs to vote for Zardari in order to pay respect to the Bhutto family for its sacrifices for the country. He claimed that it was a desire of Benazir Bhutto to see her husband as head of the state. (ANI)
