London, September 1 (ANI): The May 12 earthquake in Sichuan, China, that claimed the lives of more than 65,000 people, has forced geologists to think that similar regions may also be in danger and that seismic hazard maps should be redrawn as a result. According to a report in New Scientist, a coalition of geologists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Chengdu Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources, Sichuan, is thinking to redraw the seismic hazard maps. Using historical, geological and GPS records, the scientists modelled movements in the Earth's crust that led to the quake. This shows that although the crust in the region is being compressed very slowly, at around 1 millimeter per year, strain had been building for over 1500 years. For Sichuan province, they calculate that the next big earthquake is not due for at least 2000 years. But, for other regions with similar mountainous slopes, a large earthquake could be just around the corner. The team has highlighted the edge of the Tibetan plateau as one such region. According to Clark Burchfiel at MIT, who is the lead author of the paper, "We need to re-evaluate the criteria we use for assessing earthquake hazard." (ANI)

London, Sept 1 (ANI): A man has been held after trying to sell intimate stolen photos of Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton to a London newspaper. The photos of the couple on holiday in the Caribbean island of Mustique were offered to The Sun newspaper following the theft of a camera believed to belong to Middleton's younger sister Pippa, the paper said. The snaps, described as some of the most personal and intimate pictures ever taken of the couple, were offered to the paper for 50,000 pounds. More than 40 frames of the future King and his love were held on the digital device. In the photos, the 26-year-old royal is seen relaxing with Middleton and members of her family, including Pippa, brother James, and parents Carole and Michael. Several photos showed Middleton posing for the camera in her bikini as she enjoyed a yoga-style session on the beach, it said. In another sequence, the Prince was seen wearing a woman's hat and striking a camp pose like '70s sitcom star John Inman. Another photo showed the couple gazing at each other as they took a dip together in a pool - while a number of snaps showed them cuddling. The newspaper was contacted on Aug 29 by two men, who used the names John and George and met a reporter in a bid to find out what the snaps were worth. The men, who were secretly photographed by the newspaper, told the reporter they had found the flashcard in a gutter in northwest London. They tried to sell the photos to the Sun but the paper handed over all its information to the police and a 25-year-old man was arrested by Scotland Yard detectives in a dawn raid on a house in west London on Aug 31. The unnamed man was freed on bail after being questioned for 10 hours, and police were continuing their search for the second man. A Royal source confirmed William had been kept informed. "William was very concerned to hear that private pictures of him and the Middleton family had been stolen," the Sun quoted the source added. "When the suspect's house was raided they were accompanied by Royal protection officers," the source added. (ANI)

Bhubaneswar, Sep 1 (ANI): Orissa is limping back to normalcy as all academic institutions are opened on Monday in the Phulbani sub-division of the state's Kandhamal District. In the Baliguda sub-division, schools and colleges are expected to start after two to three days. According to official sources, the deployment of eleven companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), three companies of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and 26 platoons of the State Armed Police would continue to infuse confidence among the public. Two helicopters are also being sent by the Centre to assist in force mobilisation and relief operations. After three days curfew, the Jeypore town of Koraput District is slowly returning to normalcy. Curfew was relaxed for 10 hours in Kandhamal District on Friday. Hundreds of Christians, who fled their villages and took shelter in forests to save their lives and whose houses and properties were torched in the violence, have started to move to government shelter camps and to their villages, sources said. The violence started after the killing of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and five of his associates in the district on August 23. As the situation improved, about 5,000 people were accommodated in relief camps set up at seven places in Kandhamal and free kitchens were opened, a senior district official told reporters. Police protection was being provided at relief camps and magistrates deployed at all sensitive places. Altogether 85 criminal cases, including 11 in Kandhamal district, relating to murder, arson and rioting were registered across the state. In the violence-hit areas such as Udaygiri, Raikia, K Nuagaon, Balliguda, Phiringia, Tikabali and Chakapada hundreds of people are moving in to relief camps, seeking shelter, food and water. Meanwhile, a group of intellectuals, academicians, human rights activists and students organised a candlelight vigil in Bangalore against the increasing violence in Orissa on Friday. (ANI)
