New Delhi, Sept 26 (ANI): In a last-ditch effort to salvage the Nano car project, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has written to Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata urging him not to shift the project from Singur.

Bhattacharjee in his letter to Ratan Tata said no more disruptions would occur. "We assure you of police protection," he said.

The West Bengal Government is awaiting Ratan Tata's response.

West Bengal Industries Minister Nirupam Sen said, "The state government is trying its best to retain the Nano project in Singur."

The letter was sent after Thursday's decision at the state cabinet meeting to appeal to both the Tatas to implement the project here as well as to the opposition to cooperate in the interest of the state.

Trinamool Congress (TMC), on Thursday, said it was willing for further talks on Singur issue if the West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi takes an initiative.

Trinamool Congress did not ask the Tata Motors to leave Singur, said the TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, and added, "Let both agriculture and industry smile."

She said the state government and Communist Party of India (Marxist) were claiming that the September 7 agreement was a 'declaration' and not an accord. "They are cheating us. They have also insulted the Governor by violating the agreement", she charged.

While reading out the copy of 'agreement', Banerjee said that the TMC was ready for a 'land-based solution'.

Meanwhile truckloads of material have started rolling out of the Singur Nano factory, a sign that Tata Motors is on an exit route from West Bengal.

However, there has been no formal communication from the company so far.

Trouble began after the West Bengal government acquired 1000 acres of farmland for the Tata Motors 'Nano' small car plant at Singur last year.

The government offered compensation, which some farmers rejected and the state's main opposition TMC has been demanding that at least 400 acres be returned to farmers.

The government says it is in favour of a land-based solution for farmers but was against disturbing the Tata Motors plant site. (ANI)

Bangalore, Oct.15 (ANI): Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan says that his team has taken great confidence from Australia's inability to force a first Test victory.

Khan, who is now in Mohali, Punjab, for the second Test against Australia, yesterday claimed that the Australians lacked the firepower to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Zaheer, man of the match in the drawn Test with six wickets and a half-century, declared the pressure was on Australia to quickly find an answer or the series would be lost.

The tourists were in control of the Bangalore opener until a first-innings eighth-wicket stand of 80 between Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer late on day three shifted the momentum, with Australia never really recovering.

Buoyed by surviving 73 overs on day five for the loss of just four wickets, India cannot wait for the second Test in Mohali, starting Friday.

"We know that they can't take 20 wickets and they are on the back foot. They couldn't get me and Bhaji out. We are in with a big chance. They are under pressure. We know that," the Daily Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

Zaheer had a crack at the Australians in a press conference and earlier on the field when he accepted his individual award.t was there he also claimed the tourists had been too defensive in the Test, earning a rebuke from Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

"He can have a bit of a chuckle to himself, I don't think it means too much to us," Ponting said.

"This match clearly shows that," he said. "On a fifth-day wicket, the spinners couldn't do us any harm. So that tells everyone what their spin attack is all about. And even the pacers didn't look like getting a wicket at any stage. The pressure is on them to take 20 wickets," Zaheer said. (ANI)

London, Oct 23 (ANI): An international team of researchers have identified as many as 26 genes that are frequently mutated in the most common form of lung cancer, thus opening up avenues for developing new therapies for treating the disease.

The researchers looked at nearly 200 patients with lung adenocarcinoma and decoded or sequenced the DNA of several hundred genes that are known to or are suspected to be involved in cancer development.

By scanning the tumour genomes, they identified several abnormally active as well as silent genes.

The team was able to pinpoint more than 1,000 genetic alterations - the majority of which had not been previously known.

For example, the NF1, ATM, RB1 and APC genes, which were previously not linked to lung cancer, were mutated in a significant portion of the lung tumors analysed.

These genes have been implicated in other tumour types, suggesting roles in multiple forms of cancer.

The scientists also found genetic ties to a critical class of genes known as tyrosine kinases.

Kinases are known to promote cell growth. In lung tumours, the researchers found mutations in several groups of related tyrosine kinase genes, including the EGF, EPH, FGF, NTRK, and VEGF receptor gene families.

"In recent years, there's been some important successes for targeted therapies for some types of lung cancer," Nature quoted co-senior author Matthew Meyerson, a senior associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and an associate professor at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, as saying.

"This work helps identify new targets that might show promise for treating broader groups of lung cancer patients."

"One of the key findings from our study is that some of the newly discovered genes and pathways that are mutated in lung cancer are also known to be defective in other cancers.

"That gives us hope that targeted therapies could be used across multiple cancer types," he added.

The study is published in journal Nature. (ANI)

London, Oct 23 (ANI): The US military has launched a competition to find a design for a flying submarine, a week before the release of the latest James Bond film.

Bond drove a submersible Lotus Esprit in "The Spy Who Loved Me" and villain Scaramanga drove a flying AMC Matador coupé in "The Man With The Golden Gun" but the US group is looking for a vehicle that can do both, The Telegraph reported.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), based in Arlington, Virginia, wants a flying submarine to help small teams of Special Forces to approach coastlines undetected.

The agency said that it wants the craft in order to "maintain its tactical advantage for future coastal insertion missions".

DARPA, which was set up in 1958 as a response to the surprise launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik and is credited with the invention of the Internet, intends to spend billions developing the most promising design.

"DARPA has a budget of 3billion dollar," said spokeswoman Jan Walker.

"We issue these requests for submissions on a regular basis and we welcome ideas from anybody. We have regular large and small firms who we work with but we are open to submissions from anywhere," Walker added.

The competition specifies that the flying sub must be able to transport eight men and their equipment 1,150 miles (1,850km) by air, 115m (185km) by sea or 14m (22km) underwater - or a combination of the three - in less than eight hours, and then wait for up to three days to pick them up again.

Walker admitted that previous research in this field had included failed designs to make a submarine fly: "Prior attempts to demonstrate a vehicle with the manoeuvrability of both a submersible and an aircraft have primarily explored approaches that would endow slight capability to platforms that were largely optimised for underwater operations."

She added: "These attempts have been unsuccessful." The deadline for submitting entries is December 1. (ANI)

The catwalk queen's lawyers have, on her behalf, claimed that the rumours of her pregnancy were "absolutely false and fabricated," reports the New York Post. The rumours of her pregnancy started after she expressed the desire to have a kid in an interview with the Daily Mail. "I'd love to have a baby. It's every woman's dream and I feel that's a huge part of my life that I'm yet to experience," she said in the interview.

The 38-year-old supermodel is dating Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin. (ANI)
