Washington, Oct 23 (ANI): Anti-tobacco ads designed to either scare or disgust viewers are more likely to have a deeper impact than the ones with combination of fear and disgust, according to a new study.

The researchers from University of Missouri examined the effects of two types of content commonly used in anti-tobacco ads - tobacco health threats that evoke fear and disturbing or disgusting images.

They found that the ads, which focused on either fear or disgust increased attention and memory in viewers, while ads that included both fear and disgust decreased viewers' attention and memory.

"When fear and disgust are combined in a single television ad, the ad might become too noxious for the viewer," said Glenn Leshner, lead author of the study and co-director of the Psychological Research on Information and Media Effects (PRIME) Lab in the Missouri School of Journalism.

"We noticed several ads in our collection of anti-tobacco public service announcements that contained very disturbing images, such as cholesterol being squeezed from a human artery, a diseased lung, or a cancer-riddled tongue.

"Presumably, these messages are designed to scare people so that they don't smoke. It appears that this strategy may backfire," he added.

The researchers measured the physiological responses of 58 viewers while they watched a series of 30-second anti-tobacco ads.

The ads included fear messages that communicated health threats resulting from tobacco use (lung cancer, heart disease, etc.) or disgust content that focused on negative graphic images (dirty insects, blood, organs, etc.) or both fear and disgust content.

Electrodes were placed on the viewers' facial muscles to measure emotional responses.

"This study provides important insight into how young adults process anti-smoking messages, and it offers practical suggestions for designing effective tobacco prevention messages," said Paul Bolls, co-author of the study and co-director of the PRIME Lab.

"The way the human mind perceives and processes information in a persuasive message is the very foundation of any desired effect on targeted individuals.

The study will be published in the journal Health Communication. (ANI)

New York, Oct 23 (ANI): Sam Lal's home has turned into a pilgrimage of sorts, as neighbours and friends are flocking his Queen's home to catch a glimpse of the strange plant that resembles Hindu Lord Ganesha.

Lal, who first noticed the purple plant, from the amaranth family, claimed that the plant relieved him of his chronic back pain.

And now, everyone on Lal's block in Jamaica wants to get a peek at the incredible flower.

"I'm amazed - I actually got goosebumps when I saw it. I feel the presence of God," The New York Daily News quoted Hansannie Singh, 41, of Bellerose, Queens, as saying.

Others like Kris Ram snapped cell phone photos of the 4-foot-tall plant that is believed to resemble the elephant-headed god revered by billions of believers.

"Miracles do happen. It just goes to show that God is everywhere," said Ram.

Lal, 60, said his chronic back pain has all but disappeared since the plant, which started growing early in the summer, took on the deity's likeness.

"God is alive in everything. It's a powerful inspiration," he said. (ANI)

London, Oct 24 (ANI): It looks like Madonna's bitter divorce has taken its toll on her, for the singer is having intense Kabbalah 'anger management' counselling to deal with her fury against Guy Ritchie.

The 'Material Girl' hitmaker, who is on her world tour, is expected to head back to New York this weekend to visit the city's Kabbalah Centre.

The 50-year-old also has a counsellor from the mystical Jewish faith who accompanies her on the road to help handle her boiling rage over the split.

According to sources, the Queen of pop is furious over Ritchie's money demands and the way ugly details of their relationship have leaked out.

"Madonna is very angry with Guy - about his cold treatment of her in the marriage, about the nasty details of their marriage that have leaked out, and about the money he is demanding," the Sun quoted a source, as saying.

"She's furious that he feels entitled to get a lot of cash, while she's the one working her ass off on tour.

"She is getting help from a Kabbalah counsellor who is helping her try to put aside her anger, so they can settle the divorce as quickly as possible for the sake of the children.

"The counsellor is telling her she will meet her soulmate - but first has to calm her anger," the source added. (ANI)

Kathmandu, Oct 29 (ANI): Nepal Prime Minister Prachanda has said the government is committed to complete the constitution drafting process within the stipulated time.

Speaking at a programme here on Tuesday, Prachanda said the government is taking initiatives to forge political consensus for drafting a constitution that will reflect the aspirations of the people.

He said the drafting process would begin as soon as the ongoing budget session ended.

On the issue of army integration, Prachanda said he was hopeful that the Nepali Congress (NC) would join the army integration special committee in order to bring the peace process in the nation.

He argued that the Nepali Congress would be going against the people's mandate and the peace process if it stayed out of the army integration committee.

He also reacted to the Nepali Congress's stance against appointing two members from the Maoist party in the committee and said the Nepali Congress had two members in the peace committee that existed earlier.

Defending the appointment of two members from the Maoist party, he said, "We accepted two members from the Nepali Congress even as our position in the interim parliament was equal," Nepalnews reported (ANI)

Santa Clara, California, September 29 (ANI/Business Wire India): PMC-Sierra, Inc. today added four new multi-band devices to its WiZIRD(TM) family of highly integrated WiMAX(TM) RF IC solutions for Broadband Wireless Subscriber equipment.

These new devices enable WiMAX system designers to leverage a single radio design to provide Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) and Network Interface Cards (NICs) for all popular broadband wireless radio bands (450-928 MHz, 2.3-2.7 GHz, 2.7-2.9 GHz, 3.3-3.8 GHz and 4.9-5.95 GHz, see Figure 1) for worldwide WiMAX deployments.

PMC-Sierra's WiZIRD family is the industry's most versatile and complete WiMAX RF IC portfolio (see Figure 2), providing cost and performance flexibility in addressing global spectrum challenges.

WiMAX is fast emerging as a technology of choice for broadband access in developing economies and greenfields such as India, Russia, Latin America, and the Middle East. However, the lack of global spectrum policy has led to a fragmented spectrum and added complexity for system vendors and carriers.

For example, the Government of India recently announced its policy and guidelines for a WiMAX spectrum, establishing plans for an auction in the 2.3 and 2.5 GHz bands for broadband wireless data services and provisions for future auctions of the 700 MHz and 3.3-3.6 GHz bands when available. In addition, the existing 2.7-2.9GHz spectrum is being selected for WiMAX services. Indian carriers planning WiMAX deployments will require cost-effective and future-proof solutions with spectrum flexibility.

OEMs can leverage the PMC-Sierra WiZIRD family's multi-band support to enable an ecosystem of WiMAX equipment for broadband coverage in global markets, reducing cost and time-to-market. OEMs can further enhance return on investment by aggregating volume over different frequency bands and applications through common BOM. A multi-band design also addresses future demand for roaming-ready NIC applications.

"PMC-Sierra has long-standing relationships with telecom equipment providers and carriers, and they have identified that one of their biggest concerns is reach," said Tom Sun, vice president and general manager for PMC-Sierra's Broadband Wireless Division. "PMC-Sierra has made great efforts in driving RF IC innovations that extend the reach and reliability of wireless links to enable high-performance WiMAX equipment."

"With their new range of WiMAX 802.16e (Rev-e) radio frequency solutions, PMC-Sierra confirms that they are major partners of Alcatel-Lucent's Open CPE Program," said Karim El Naggar, vice president and head of Alcatel-Lucent's WiMAX activities. "Their capability to design multi-band devices will further accelerate the availability of WiMAX solutions for diverse WiMAX markets, and in particular 700MHz solutions for new applications and developing economies. Alcatel-Lucent is the world's leading provider of innovative WiMAX and wireless broadband network solutions," he added.

PMC-Sierra's WiZIRD family features the industry's highest density WiMAX RF IC solutions, integrating conversion ZIF RF transceiver, analog and digital converters, and an industry-standard JEDEC JESD207 compliant baseband digital interface. The devices use an innovative harmonic canceling technique to achieve extremely linear output at high power levels and deliver up to 64QAM modulation for Tx paths at 0dBm output power level with an EVM rating that addresses a complete spectrum of WiMAX solutions, from base station applications to mobile subscriber solutions. The devices feature:

-- Low-power receivers and transmitters;

-- Direct-conversion ZIF design;

-- Patent-pending integrated DC Offset algorithm that performs DC Offset correction every frame, minimizing drift over temperature;

-- Support for 802.16e-2005 and 802.16-2004 IEEE standards;

-- Configurable channel bandwidths of 3.5 MHz, 5 MHz, 7 MHz, 8.75 MHz, 10 MHz, 14 MHz and 20 MHz;

-- Flexible baseband device interface options;

-- Integrated analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters; and

-- Integrated transmitter baluns. (ANI)
